Excellent article Rebecca. I must admit, I struggle with being cynical myself and fight to convince myself that change can be permanent. My cousin, whose Mother was white British and Father was from India, is a Muslim. After 9-11 she would walk down the street and have complete strangers spitting at her. This is in Britain. It terrified her so much, this hatred towards Muslims, that she removed her head scarf on a perm. basis, ultimately resulting in her alienation from the Muslim community. (There were other complex and personal reasons as to why she decided to remover her scarf too, but it isn't necessary for me to touch upon them).
But faced with this level of hatred, sometimes I ever wonder if some individuals can overcome their prejudices, if it's truly possible for them to open their hearts and their minds.
But sometimes all that we have is hope, and if that hope is what makes us climb out of bed in the morning to fight a good fight, then it's enough to sustain us, to help work towards overcoming the cynism.
Peace
Carol

I'm crushed by prop 8!
It's tainted the win week for me.
Baseless bigotry still has so much unfounded power in US.
I know Pres. Obama will allow coalitions an empowered voice w/ out a violent/investigative backlash...
but after the last 8yrs and in this economy i find myself feeling isolated, vulnerable, needing healing...needing my wife : (

Thank you Carol! We're still in beta, but I'm liking it a lot, too. It feels closer, somehow, to where/who/how I am. I appreciate your feedback.
