Alma de Fuego--Soul of Fire

I love reading black femi power at Alma de fuego. She asks an important question today, referencing a Diego Rivera painting. Here is an excerpt of my comments. You can find the whole thing on the post.
What I like about this image, and many by Rivera is the portrayal of women and men working together to carry the burden. That is what seems to be lost in so many contemporary critiques-- this idea of partnership as a soul maintenance program in the face of empire. Even more, as a mechanism through which accomplishment can be achieved. In that way it is actually a redefinition of success. Success here is the way in which the two are not at odds--their union, the tenderness of it in the face of unspeakable brutality, is more "successful" than any financial gain.

REBECCA,
IF YOU HATE YOUR MOTHER SO MUCH WHY ARE YOU USING THE NAME WALKER. YOUR MOTHER IS A GENIUS, YOU DON'T EVEN COME CLOSE.
Hi Anonymous--
I always leave posts like yours on, because I think in some way they can contribute to the overall discussion of celebrity, mental health, the mother daughter relationship, and the role of readers in matters as complicated as a rift between a mother and daughter who are both writers.
My love for my mother goes without saying. My story is one of encouraging all children of neglectful, untreated mentally ill, or otherwise absent parents to get the help they need to negotiate difficult relationships. I try to model the process of getting crucial support and the advisement of professionals and others who care to make decisions that may be excrutiatingly difficult to make. Decisions such as mine--to disconnect from my mother after she wrote me a letter telling me she no longer wanted to be my mother.
Of course I wrote about this in Baby Love, and spoke extensively on it in many media outlets. There is an exhaustive NPR interview about it here. I continue to be open to healing my relationship with my mother and have taken great pains to do so. The response has not been positive.
In terms of my writing, perhaps you should look at your need to compare us. We are very different writers, who come from very different contexts. I feel I have learned a great deal from her about writing, about how to be an artist. But I am not in competition with my mother. As these things go, it is generally the other way around. Mothers in competition with their daughters. You may want to look into this for your own research.
This is an interesting piece on a Pscyhology Today blog on maternal envy.
Either way, I'm glad for the opportunity to continue this dialogue. I hear from many readers how helpful my decisions have been in supporting their own. Fortunately, that is how I measure my success or failure as a writer.
