The Beautiful Five Thousand Dollar House

I love prefabs. I think they're the answer to unsustainable living. Impermanent, earth friendly, affordable. This one is small, and marketed to developing countries and dislocated people. Imagine this instead of trailers in New Orleans.

Mmmm, yes.

I'm not the biggest fan of prefab dwellings although I do think they have a purpose. That purpose being not to serve as a dwelling in the strictest sense but maybe as a transitory or temporary dwelling. There's something about the construction and architecture and how it relates to its site (and therefore social and environmental context) as it is erected. I think this is particularly the case when the architecture attempts to materially, and also aesthetically, relate to the site. A quick and obvious example would be to use some type of clay cladding, facade or external facing material for a house that possibly sits close to say a clay cliff or clay quarry.

It's about being sensitive to and having a connection with the geography of the buildings context which I do not feel can happen with a dwelling that is manufactured off-site and them just dumped onto the site.
