Invitation to Oxford
Had to post this invitation from Oxford.
What do you think. Should I go?
To Whom it May Concern at the Office of Rebecca Walker:
Please find attatched an invitation to speak at the Oxford Union on Tuesday 27th October, the motion for this forum will be 'This House believes that white middle class women have stolen the feminist cause from those who need it most'. The details of the motion are outlined in the attatched document, I'm sure that you will have alot to contribute.
The event will be taking place within Gender week, and will be run in conjunction with OUSU and OxWib (Oxford Women in Business). The format will be relatively informal, a short address followed by a Question and Answer, but obviously we can be flexible to any alternative ideas and requirements.
The Union has hosted a wealth of prestigious speakers including Mother Teresa, Richard Nixon, The Dalai Lama, Micheal Jackson and Malcolm X to name but a few. We would be honoured to add you to this list.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Best Wishes,
Secretary
The Oxford Union

Yes indeed! and bring me Rebecca!
Would you like to go? I ask this because you ask if you should go. Do you not consider this a worthwhile opportunity? I would like to be present at one, they are without doubt an occasion not to be missed
Would love to see you speak in the UK!
Kate in London.
OH GO!! YOU WILL RULE!! I'm bummed i won't be back in time to see you speak :(
The middle class in Britain is not at all like our middle class in the states as you may already know; they have a lot more money for starters are much snobbier and patronizing and despite being all colours of the rainbow they seem to want to "be collectively white" consciously or unconsciously and not necessarily with malice if that makes any sense.
One half is really back to the land, code pinkish and pseudo Bohemian while the other is not that political and more of the Yummy Mummy pedicure sect. The former's brand of race relations and feminism sadly has opened the way for the BNP; its just not full of 'fight' like we are in the states and too outdated rich Labour hippie. Slavery was outsourced during empire not in your face like we have in the states so the urgency is just not in the air. The latter lives closer to the impoverished and/or immigrants as so many areas of London which were once really bad have been refurbished and gentrified with million dollar homes next to council estates.
The yum mum's are the ones who could make the changes as they are closer to to the people but oh that class system we have in the UK-it's one of three choices and no shades of gray. You have to be brave to step away from it and a one and a million to eclipse it. But Brits LISTEN and they get it quickly when it comes to casting aside circular logic like we are seeing in all theses race card accusations in the US. It WAS after all London where Paul Robeson first said he discovered Africa and he was able study the history, languages and indigenous peoples of Africa during the 20's and 30's whereas the US had ZERO of that available.
Martin Bashir aka Gunga Din who did the hatchet job on Michael Jackson and sealed his doom is a great example of the assimilated. Dark British man of Asian descent puts on a show , defames black man and through the alchemy of race becomes a white.
My husband is an indigenous British working class man and I was working in the middle of the South London middle class when we met. Clapham, just lovely people to work for, the green common, the Parisian/Healdsburgesque shops...all so intoxicating. It was in that milieu that we decided it was time to start our own mini class and have a baby!
Seriously, you will own that forum and they will be the better for it.
Oh, and let them know that a Paul Robeson historian speaker with references named Super Amanda who lives in London will be at Oxford ANY month or day of the year!

Check that out!
Rebecca, you must go. I may be making a naive staement but you could possibly be the only Black woman there representing ! (It does sound naive doesn't it..but I don't know, not a feminist). Anyway, you must be there and your critique is needed in such forums and places where only the "invited" are permitted. GO!.
Go Go Go! If someone asks for you to be there guest, they want and respect your opinion. You are a esteemed member of society that is wonderful at helping people understand many issues in today's world. Besides it's Oxford!

Oxford is a very nice city, I've been there 2 years ago!
Robeson, the newsweek link you provided seems not working. BTW, this is old post so you already visited it a long ago correct?
